Movie Franchises That Should Come to an End

Movies are being made all the time and the industry just seems to get bigger and bigger. An issue that the movie industry currently has is throwing out more movies to a franchise that really need to stop. Why must they stop you may ask? There are many different reasons which include: the franchise has overstayed its welcome, other films are unnecessary, and the plots/characters are constantly changing and its distracting from its original work.

The first movie to make it onto the list is the Terminator series. The first few movies received a lot of praise and is one of the most iconic films in Hollywood. The first movie was released in 1984 and is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous roles. A problem with this particular franchise is that it basically lost its touch. With almost every Terminator movie, the plots get more confusing and twisted with each film. The movie is consistently being recast as well, making each John Connor different from the next. In 2009, the fourth installment to the series, completely bombed the box office and had such horrible reviews. Although this should have been an indication to end the franchise, a new Terminator movie is expected to be released this summer.

Superheroes and arch villains have been taking over the silver screen in the last couple of years. Everyone can appreciate the good guy vs. the bad guy and all things action-packed. What could go wrong? The answer is the constant reboots, overstaying the welcome of certain franchises. Spiderman for example has definitely ran its course a long time ago. Back in the early 2000’s Tobey McGuire starred in the Spiderman trilogy. A few years later Andrew Garfield stars in a remake of the Spiderman character in the “Amazing Spiderman” films. Unnecessary? Yes. There are rumors of another reboot of spidey that will release in 2017. Spiderman is not the only franchise that has overstayed its welcome. Fantastic Four is another prime example. Again, in the early 2000’s Fantastic Four hit theaters and even produced a sequel. This year, a new Fantastic Four (whole new cast, same story) is coming out soon. These movies did not require a reboot of any source, and it seems as though movie companies are just panning out for more money. The franchises have definitely overstayed its welcome and movie-goers are tired of the same thing over and over again.

The last film franchise that needs to come to an end is Transformers. The first two movies were quite the success with all its action-packed scenes and a great storyline. The third film was bearable but did not live up to its past movies. Once the series hit its fourth installment with all new characters that seemed to kill the vibe for Transformers fans. How many more times are evil robots going to attempt to take over the world? It’s time for something new or just to end it. Although Michael Bay (director for the franchise) plans on doing no more, a new director is set to take over a new Transformers project that is expected to be released next year.

Many movies start out with a great start and as sequels continue, the spark just starts to run out. It seems as though movie companies are just taking something that has already been done and just remaking it. There is no originality or no continuing streak of success for certain franchises. These franchises have either overstayed their welcome, unnecessary sequels, or constantly changing plots/characters and basically rebooting past films.
